CHARACTER NAME: Irie, Shouichi
SERIES: Katekyo Hitman REBORN! ( INFO.)
CANON POINT: chapter 282 ➥ ABSOLUTE THRESHOLD.
AGE: 24
APPEARANCE: HERE.
PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY:
Shouichi had the misfortune of being transported to Nuadoria just as the Vongola had broken into Melone base. With many factors of his current mission an absolute wreck and no way to monitor the progress it left him feeling like more of a basket case than usual. This continued until Byakuran also appeared in Nuadoria several months later, which proposed a threat in its own right, albeit an isolated one. Once Byakuran had left the city, Shouichi became obsessed with developing a method to leave, himself. Unfortunately his findings on the time and space continuum in his world did not help him in Nuadoria's foreign dimension. He then took to locking himself up within his residence to read obsessively in hopes that he would find clues to help his new research.
Not being particularly adept in hand to hand combat, Shouichi stuck close to Gamma The Electric despite their previous animosity. With each challenge they grew to tolerate one another more until they had formed something of a working partnership, though they would be hard pressed to admit it. Most of this was all for the sake of the princess of the Giglio Nero, Uni, who also arrived within the city for some time. While looking after her, Shouichi was incapacitated by Mukuro, who kidnapped Uni to lure out Gamma. To make matters worse, Byakuran appeared again, but from a different timeline. He then proceeded to fire both Gamma and Shouichi from their positions as A-rank squad captains of the Millefiore and began to make trouble with Uni. It was probably for the best that the princess vanished from the city shortly after.
During a period of time where residents of Nuadoria were being transported to other worlds without warning, Shouichi somehow managed to land himself back in his own world. However, it wasn't the same timeline. Upon finding that the Melone base had been destroyed, he runs from the scene in a panic. It's not a few moments later that he's shot by Dan Smith and Mukuro and consequently kidnapped to aid in solving a problem on the moon.
Later on, Nuadoria is crumbling and there's no way to possibly save it. When the world goes black and the end is surely near, he finds himself at the edge of oblivion with both Mukuro and a new friend, Yuuki.
Shouichi would then wake up in a hotel room with both Yuuki and Elena, but that would quickly become a hazy memory that felt almost dreamlike.
Shouichi was the last of Nuadoria transplants from his world to return to his timeline. Once back in the Melone base, he manages to successfully carry out the remainder of his master plan and reveal to the Vongola that he had been a double agent all along. He goes on to help them train to ultimately fight Byakuran, who reveals that Shouichi and the other Millefiore captains had all been given fake mare rings, which had been a major source of their power. The real rings belonged to the real Funeral Wreaths, who were apparently much more powerful. The Vongola and the Funeral Wreaths did battle in the style of a game both Byakuran and Shouichi had created in college. Feeling responsible, Shouichi participates in this battle on the Vongola side. Due to what should have been expected trickery, he loses when he is stabbed by Kikyou. It is then that he explains he is at fault for Byakuran realizing his true powers. Miraculously, Shouichi survives and witnesses the final battle, including Byakuran's demise. Almost immediately after this he finds himself in Nuadoria once more.
Once returned Shouichi quickly becomes bitter. In a conversation with Mukuro, it is implied that now that his plan to protect the future had been completed he was no longer necessary to have around in their world. It was also implied that his return to Nuadoria wasn't a mere coincidence. This left emotions running extremely high and though he wouldn't admit it, Shouichi believed him. (and still does.) Finally being afforded the time to reflect on his life and the loss of his personal goals and dreams, Shouichi feels as if he has no choice but to reluctantly accept Nuadoria as his home.
Shouichi's element within Nuadoria is Darkness.
This is a reflection on his other side and his history of harboring secrets. When necessary, Shouichi is known to possess the qualities of a "wolf in sheep's clothing". While he has lost the power of the Mare Ring, this element would take its place.
Said to be in the image of their chosen owner, his Die Gestalt, or animal familiar within Nuadoria is a raccoon. he is otherwise known as "Sampson". They are adaptive, problem solving animals, noted for their intelligence. In folk tales, the raccoon is often regarded as a trickster, who outsmarts other animals. They're also large rodents with an affinity for destruction and eating garbage, so there's that. NOTE: Sampson will not be joining Shouichi in Exit Void, so his Darkness affinity is null and void. However, since both of these subjects had a hand in his personal development in game, they're worth noting.
It is additionally worth noting that since the Moon Fiasco with Dan Smith and Mukuro where he was shot in his right leg, Shouichi has acquired a noticeable limp which does well to impede his already laughable level of physical prowess. He often seeks aspirin or other pain killers when available and if made to walk for a certain amount of time without a break he's likely to become quite cranky.
PERSONALITY:
When we meet Shouichi at the beginning of his role in the story, he doesn't seem to be anyone particularly remarkable. In fact, most everything about him looks to be downright average, from his appearance, to his family and even their apartment. All it took to flip his mundane life around was one unfortunate run in with the Bovino Famiglia. When Lambo is sent flying into his bedroom and a package is mistakenly delivered to the home, Shouichi is begrudgingly sent to return both. A hit notice is misinterpreted as the original delivery address, which sent him directly to Tsunayoshi Sawada and Reborn. However, the delivery of the package never happened. This is how he was thrown mercilessly into the world of the Mafia.
Unknowingly possessing the bullets belonging to the Ten Year Bazooka, it was a simple cleaning accident that changed everything. As an idealistic fourteen year old boy, to be sent into the future ten years to learn that he didn't grow up to be who he wanted was devastating. Shouichi wouldn't have it. He began altering his life in an effort to change the future. Each time he used a bullet to time travel, he found himself in the presence of a mysterious man. Every time he met him, the conditions of the world became worse, ultimately being left in a state of complete destruction. Without knowing, Shouichi had caused an apocalypse ten years into the future.
This is where he gets resourceful.
With his Future Self in contact with his Past Self using the technology of the Ten Year Bazooka, Shouichi becomes involved in a plan so intricate it leads you to consider that he may not be as average as his background once confirmed. Or perhaps it is just that his grave mistakes have led him to adapt extraordinarily. When we meet up with him again, he has worked his way up to an A-rank squad captain for the Millefiore Famiglia. We also learn that he's spent quite a lot of time and energy researching the same device that sent him into the future and created this debacle ten years ago. In fact, he is working on harnessing the same power for the sake of that mysterious man: Byakuran, who would eventually use it to destroy the world.
While it must seem like a backwards way of going about things, Shouichi remains deeply committed to the assignment: Learn to control time travel in order to obtain the Vongola rings to complete the 7³. This would unlock the ultimate power that Byakuran was seeking. Though in order to collect the rings, the Vongola themselves had to be transported into the future. This gave Shouichi the opportunity to put them up against Byakuran to keep the power of the 7³ out of his hands for certain. So with the help of the Tsunayoshi Sawada and Kyoya Hibari of the future, Shouichi would become something of a double agent, working within the Millefiore but ultimately aiding the Vongola Famiglia while appearing as a dangerous enemy.
Shouichi understood there was no room for failure in this situation, so he blocked his memory of his knowledge of the future for five years. This allowed him to become close to Byakuran through college and build their friendship without any bias. While he would later reflect that the time they had spent together during those years was the happiest time of his life, for the greater good of the world he would have to defeat his friend.
This is when he became an actor.
Shouichi Irie isn't a man of steely reserve or stoicism. When the right buttons have been pushed, however, he can be.
While within the Millefiore Shouichi finds difficulty in being taken seriously by both his peers and underlings. This has some to do with the fact that he appears as the commander Byakuran's favorite subordinate and also because his appearance and demeanor don't command the sort of respect needed for a mafia operation. He is shown to be highly avoidant by ditching his assistants and finding ways to cut communication with his superior. In dealing with other officers and members of the Millefiore his attempts to be domineering are obvious and he overcompensates by developing a "strictly business" attitude when addressing them. However, when intimidated it is clearly written all over his face. In other, more candid conversations he comes off more dry and cynical in attitude. With so much riding on his shoulders, Shouichi expectedly cracks in the "A-rank facade" he puts up now and then. Usually this is seen through debilitating stomach pains caused by stress or in angry outbursts. That gives him a sort of "loose canon" vibe that continually puzzled his fellow comrades, when in reality he is just terrified. With communication devices placed in his uniform and surveillance cameras on every wall of the Melone Base, the chances of being found out are exceptionally high. This translates quite clearly as death looming around every corner, every moment of every day. Should the mission be compromised, not only would Shouichi be executed, but the world would likely be lost. Due to the nature of the assignment and what was at stake, anxiety takes its toll on him. This is very apparent to those around Shouichi, either by his choice in words or sudden outbursts. It also does quite the job of making him appear both suspiciously reserved and immature.
Although he even goes as far to fully admit that he fails to act properly as a squad leader, that's where his "Other Side" conveniently comes into play. Shouichi's Other Side is what appears to be a complete dissociation from his struggle. Played out like a psychological defense against his surroundings, the Other Side is everything necessary for Shouichi to become a power player in his position. With a complete and dramatic turn in demeanor, he appears confident, cold and ruthless. It is through this method that he can achieve the control he needs. While it doesn't make him completely immune to the pressures of his situation, even with its minor setbacks the Other Side is highly successful in dealing with key components, both planned and unplanned during the most stressful of times during his mission. With this created persona, he, who had hardly been taken seriously in the past can now order the execution of both (defective) comrade and foe with little question. Whether or not it was intentional, this method works effectively as a "wolf in sheep's clothing" tactic.
Despite his accomplishments in terms of education and ranking within the Millefiore, one issue regarding Shouichi is that he is undeniably immature. Prone to anxiety, his nervousness causes him physical distress and leaves him with a short temperament. It is possible that the high stress conditions in his life have left him emotionally stunted, or perhaps he was simply meant to be high-strung. At times his reactions have a significant lack of composure, sometimes even when he is pretending to be someone he is not. However, even with his short-comings, it ought to be noted that Shouichi is far braver than he is possibly given credit for. With the burden of his guilty conscience he was willing to risk and even give up his life at the chance to redeem himself. Reckless decision after reckless decision makes up his life story over the course of ten years. In those ten years he managed to help destroy the world and help save it. His experiences have humbled him, but they haven't stopped him. He isn't one to be overlooked by his boyish appearance, either. A genius strategist, Shouichi executes obscenely clever power plays, both with Melone Base and with the game Choice. To echo his friend, Spanner: Shouichi has always been good at seeing the whole picture. He makes a considerably worthy ally in that regard.
ABILITIES: Shouichi possesses the ability of the Sun Flame, which is primarily used for healing and power boosting. Due to his lack of physical strength and the fact that the Sun Flame is not ideal for hand to hand combat, it is his preference to act as emergency medical support. However, he does not have much experience in using his flame since his fake Mare Ring was destroyed and elemental flames are more easily harnessed with an item. Without one, it takes a lot of energy to summon and apply a flame and if overused could kill him. Due to this, Shouichi doesn't attempt to use it unless the situation is seen as dire.
POSSESSIONS: Nothing of any particular interest. His possessions in his previous game with minimal at best, so all he owns to speak of are the clothes on his back and his glasses.

He felt his chest seize up; lungs deflate. The serenity that came with being alone within these walls disappeared in an instant. There was something about the presence of Rokudo Mukuro that always made him feel on edge. Perhaps that's because Shouichi knew that as long as he was nearby, that he was a player in his game. With each soft foot step; each light drip of water from the ends of Mukuro's damp hair, Shouichi felt the lump in his throat grow larger.
He really couldn't stand being caught off guard like this.
It wasn't until pills rattled within their plastic tube that he realized his hands were shaking. Hastily setting it down, he reached for his cappuccino and waited.
It was a plan that had been orchestrated by Sawada, this arrangement. Both Shouichi Irie and Rokudo Mukuro were no strangers to trouble, and for that they were given pseudonyms and placement, under the pre-tense of a false partnership. While the two of them appeared to be uncannily connected by the proverbial red string of fate, it was only their fake identities that were married*. (*according to the country of Sweden, at least.)
He was sucking foam now, teeth hitting against the edge of the cup. He had wanted to act as if he wasn't waiting; like he hadn't noticed. It was much too obvious, though. He always knew. Ten years was enough time to learn.
Shouichi felt his feet stick to the floor. It had been a long time. A couple of months? The weeks blended together sometime after seven, especially when heavy doses of monotony and routine were so generously stirred in. While his stomach lurched with anxiety, a part of him was eager to see what would happen next. It was a part of him he often forgot existed until odd moments like this. Truthfully, Rokudo Mukuro made him feel all of the things his physician had advised him to avoid.
The lightning struck again, thunder giving a dull roar in the distance.
And there he was.
Shouichi sipped at nothing.
"Good morning."
